Photoshop CS5 Content Aware Fill Vs. GIMP Resynthesizer
A few days ago Adobe released a sneak preview of a new feature in their newest Photoshop version, CS5. Content aware fill. I saw the video on Youtube and needless to say I was very impressed. And I couldn’t wait to try it out. You can see the preview below.
Today, I find out from a post in Omg!Ubuntu that GIMP has had this feature as an add-on and has been around for a long time. It has all the functionality of Photoshop CS5 Content Aware Fill and has more options to tweak it too.
To install in Ubuntu just type the command below in the terminal.
sudo apt-get install gimp-resynthesizer
To use it just select the area you want and go to Filters -> Maps -> Resynthesize
Well, looks like one-up for the open source world!

It seemed to me that GIMP was faster too! way to go GIMP!

Doesn’t look so.
Looks carefully : Resynthesizer does not even comes close to CS5 results. The lens flare removal under the bench delete all shadow structure, and the panoramic picture has blurred edges (right side), cannot compare with the reconstruction process in CS5…

Okay, now which panorama is more realistic? The one that has crappy clouds (photoshop) or the one that has clouds that actually look like they belong there (gimp)?
Even if it did look better in Photoshop’s filter, take into account that Adobe didn’t even create it, but took it from the open source community and won’t release the source of their modification.
Also, it doesn’t take GIMP or Photoshop to tell you are under the age of 18… I’d estimate about 12 at the oldest.

My friend Meshak swears by GIMP, I should give the thing a try one of these days… (But I don’t use Photoshop anyway… Paint.NET is more than enough for me! lol)

I use Gimp quite a bit and I’ve used the Resynthesizer plugin.
From my own experiences with Resynthesizer and from a close look at the various CS5 articles and videos it seems to me that while the basic mechanism is the same the CS5 implementation is aware of the structure of the surrounding area and so preserves edges and transitions through the patched area which Resynthesizer doesn’t do.
That said Gimp and Resynthesizer are free, Photoshop on the other hand is quite expensive.

Need to say that Liquid Rescale and Colorize (from gray tones or BW to realistic colored images) was in Gimp long before Photoshop CS4 ?.
Open source is a never ending source for the “innovators” ..like Adobe on this case.
After GEGL integration (16, 32, 48 bits/pixel) and GPU accelerated canvas, I am curious to check the new “innovations” of mr. Nack and the PS team.

This is really cool but that content aware option cant handle 4 channel imagery. I am working with the RGB + Infred channel (Alpha channel)
Why can’t it process all 4 of the channels? What it does is process the 3 channels perfectly but it screws up the 4th channel (alpha channel)
It works great with a regular 3 channel image.
Can anyone offer any suggestions.?

Essential Gimp Plugins for Web Development : Ranjith Siji – Programming the Web

Pretty disappointed with GIMP in general and Resynthesizer in particular…this is *the* make-or-break functionality for me, but it doesn’t seem to work for me…I get very strange results — and AFAIK I’ve installed the resynthesizer.exe file and the smart-recover.csm file correctly.
Basically, I’m just fiddling with GIMP until Photoshop CS 6 comes out soon…sorry, really wanted to like GIMP but it reminds me of Drupal, with everything all over the place, especially this Resynthesizer plugin, where information is scattered all over and incomplete, you feel like you’re walking into the middle of a conversation on astro-optics or something, just nothing to help the beginner along, not even installation instructions — and what’s this “Heal” business; is that a plugin that complements Resynthesizer or a part of it????
Everything is just so scatter-shot with this one…GIMP itself may be just fine, but I’m surprised that such an amazing plugin is so hamstrung (yes I know this isn’t a commercial product but come on!)….
